Coaching philosophy:

It takes no talent to give 100% in what you do with a great attitude.  Give me your best, be your best and I will help you become your best.

Favorite quote:

The best teams are made up of a bunch of nobodies who love everybody, serve anybody, and don’t care about becoming a somebody

GEORGE MENDAZONA

Varsity Assistant Coach

George is recognized as one of the best athletes and baseball players that have come out of Central Oregon. He attended Ridgeview HS where he starred as a baseball, basketball and football player. He was player of the year in the conference in baseball and basketball and was All-State in all three sports (3x baseball, 2x basketball and 1x football)

After high school, George played baseball at Oregon State where he and his roommate Adley Ruschman powered the Beavers to the top. After four years at Oregon State he finished his playing career at Lubbock Christian. On the subject of coaching at Summit, George wrote:

"I want to give back to a community where I was raised. A community that did not have the resources available then that are now much more accessible to the kids in our area (personal training, high level club teams, private lessons). I believe you will see a jump in both skills and fundamentals working with me, as well as watching your athlete have plenty of fun (after all, it is a game!). It is my passion to help kids see their potential in sport and maximize that out on the field. I also aim to shape my athletes into respectful and responsible young kids. I am a believer in respect, character, and all the other traits that not only benefit kids on the field but also as people in our community. I hope to make an impact on all of the people I work with and I hope we will have plenty of fun in the years to come."

LUKE SIMPSON

Assistant Coach

Luke Simpson was born and raised in Seattle, Washington, where he attended Seattle Prep High School. A multi-sport captain in both baseball and football, he earned First Team All-State honors in each sport during his high school career.

After graduating, Luke continued as a dual-sport athlete at the collegiate level. He began his college career as a redshirt freshman walk-on catcher at Gonzaga during the 2011–2012 season before transferring to the University of Redlands, where he played football as an outside linebacker. At Redlands, he was a three-year starter and earned his degree in Biology and Physical Education.

Luke coaches baseball because of the lasting impact the game had on his life. Baseball taught him discipline, accountability, teamwork, and resilience, and provided some of his most meaningful experiences during high school and college. His goal is to give back to the game and help student-athletes develop both on and off the field while creating the same positive, memorable experience he was fortunate to have.

Luke lives in Bend, Oregon with his wife and has spent the past 12 years working in technology sales. He is excited to be part of the Summit High School baseball program and to support the growth and development of its student-athletes.

ANDREW HEILMAN

Assistant Coach

Andrew Heilman moved to Bend 19 years ago and started his journey with baseball when he was very little. Heilman attended Summit High School from 2016-2020, representing Storm baseball as a utility player, playing in almost every position across his 4 years. He carried over his passion of baseball, athletics, and fitness to Oregon State University, where he completed his bachelor's in Kinesiology in 2025 and is working on continuing his education to become a Physical Therapist.

This is Andrew's 5th year with the Summit Storm Baseball Program, and 1st year as a Coach as he strives to see and assist development for all players entering and participating in our program. “Being able to take on such an impactful role in coaching within a program that played a significant role in the man I am today is truly a blessing. Being in their shoes not too long ago makes me realize the impact this program and this game has done for me.”

Andrew seeks in helping players develop in all areas of the game, sharing his baseball experience and knowledge of the human body across the program that helped him become the person he is, Heilman believes that “Thought discipline, character, and attitude you can not only become the player you aim to be, but the teammate everyone deserves, we all make mistakes, but we all learn from them and become better because of them. It’s more than a team game, it’s the program and the brothers you get to experience this all with.”

Andrew currently works as an Exercise Specialist through Therapeutic Associates and is a NASM certified personal trainer. He is excited to see how his future is going to unfold.
